Fountain Cave

Probably the most mysterious and evasive place under St. Paul, Fountain Cave used to be one of the city's great natural landmarks with a length of over 1000 feet. It is often considered the birthplace of St. Paul. However, the entrance was filled in by some thoughtless construction workers during the reconstruction of Shepard Road back in the 1960s and the cave has been lost. All that remains is a plaque on the side of Shepard Riad describing the cave's history. Our repeated attemps to locate it have failed, including passing either over or under it (we don't know which!). We've found all kinds of weird stuff down there - most of all an inexplicable mass of grainy, loose sandbox-style sand - but nothing that resembles the cave
